[indent][indent][b][color=red]R[/color][/b][color=gray][sub]haegar. the Prince of Dragonstone; the strapping, silver-haired son of the Mad King Aerys Targaryen and, by all rights, the heir to the Iron Throne. Rhaegar was born in eyesight of the fires that wracked Summerhall in 259AC, and it is said that to this day the tragedy of Summerhall follows him, casting a shadow over the young man. Despite all, Rhaegar manages to be his father's opposite in almost every way imaginable. Where his father is malevolent, he is kind; where Aerys is craven and paranoid, Rhaegar is brave and forthright. A true role model to which all Targaryens should have aspired. It was said that when ever Targaryen was born, the Gods would flip a coin; on one hand, genius, and on the other was pure insanity. Rhaegar, unlike his father, proved a veritable genius.

It is said that Rhaegar learnt to read long before anybody might've expected him to, prompting wonder whether his mother had swallowed parchment and a candle during her pregnancy. As a child he was studious and quiet, even to the point of obsession, which was both the source of much merriment -- and worry -- about the heir to the throne. Would Rhaegar prove to be a warrior as well as a scholar? Or would he be a craven, worse, would he join the Septry? Between his love of literature and his love of music, Rhaegar may have seemed all too... Effeminate, were it not for one fateful day; after reading something of which only Rhaegar could describe in detail, he was prompted to take up the life of a warrior. He truly did the Targaryens proud, as he proved to be an able-bodied and skilled fighter; at the age of seventeen he was knighted, though it must be said that he always loved his harp more than his lance.

Not only was Rhaegar liked by the nobility and court, he was loved by the people as well. It was at the tournament in Lannisport, it was said that while the smallfolk cheered for Tywin twice as much as they did for Aerys II, they cheered only half as hard for Tywin as they did for Rhaegar. The sight of the silver haired prince walking the streets of King’s Landing wasn’t an uncommon sight, and it’s commonly accepted that Rhaegar enjoyed spending time among the smallfolk -- as well as hearing of their hardships, so as to fully understand the situation in the kingdom that would once be his own.[/sub][/color][/indent][/indent]

[indent][indent][b][color=red]L[/color][/b][color=gray][sub]ittle did Rhaegar realize, but his sentimental soul would prove to be the undoing of the great house Targaryen.

It was at the tourney of Harrenhal that Rhaegar unwittingly sowed the seeds of rebellion and set in motion a chain of events that would see his name destroyed. The prince was said to have been unstoppable in the tourney, defeating every single man against which he was pitted -- including, but not exclusive to Ser Arthur Dayne, who had dehorsed Rhaegar during the tourney at Lannisport. Rhaegar was crowned champion of the tournament, but the cheers of the crowd fell silent when he forewent his bride -- Elia, Princess of Dorne -- and instead handed the winter rose crown to Lyanna Stark. From then on, it was known to all that while Elia had his hand and his children, Lyanna held his heart. In the year following, Lyanna and Rhaegar ran off together -- an act misinterpreted by the realm as a kidnapping. When the Starks demanded the return of their sister, Brandon and his host were arrested and executed. Prince Rhaegar left his father, Aerys, his wife and children in the hands of Jaime Lannister when he marched on the Trident; a great battle which was supposed to see Rhaegar meet his bloody end to Robert Baratheon’s warhammer. Traditionally, this should be the end of Rhaegar’s story.
