Despite having the appearance of a child and the cheerful and immature personality one associates with youth, Suika is an ancient spirit ([i]youkai[/i]), an [i]oni[/i] born thousands of years ago from the superstitions of mortal men. The gourd that she carries around with her at all times can turn water into sake, and it fuels her constant, immense thirst for alcohol. Suika herself claims that she hasn't been sober in centuries.

As an oni, Suika possesses immense physical strength that belies her lithe figure, and some say she is the most powerful youkai[sup][citation needed][/sup] in [i]Gensokyo[/i], the land cut off from the Outside World where humans dwell. She values strength in others, and enjoys a fair brawl between opponents. She despises liars, cheats and cowards.

Suika has the unique magical ability to manipulate the density of any object around her, including herself. The applications of her magic are endless, even if she can only manipulate things that already exist. In the past she has used it for such feats as making herself larger or smaller, creating copies of herself, or dispersing herself to such an extent that she becomes a mist. In a fight, she can use this power to compress and strengthen her attack, or create a gravity well that draws the opponent in like a black hole. Her power is said to be so great that she could turn mountains into sand, and the moon into dust.
