Her father was a rancher and her mother a housewife, and neither held the delusion that their daughter would inherit the family business. Throughout her adolescence she was brash and exuberant, always eager to be the center of attention. It didn't hurt that she was a pretty young thing, either, unashamed of using her rapidly developing 'assets' to catch more than her fair share of the spotlight. She dreamed of being an actor, a starlet, someone whose face everybody knew. Her parents did little to nurture these tendencies, but they didn't make an attempt to quash them either, which might've been a mistake. Although they knew she'd be gone eventually, they didn't expect that her departure would be so abrupt, however--only a few days after her seventeenth birthday, she disappeared from home one fateful afternoon to chase the nearest promise of fame that she knew of. In this case, it was a travelling circus, one that was conveniently leaving town that very same day. Of course, the reality of her chosen field was much less glamorous than the image she had in her mind. Far from being the main attraction, she was relegated to menial labor, cleaning up after audiences, waiting hand and foot on the real stars, and tending to the circus animals, most of whom she liked more than her human co-workers. As she continued, she got another ridiculous idea stuck in her head: She wanted to be a beast tamer, respected and adored for her talent in commanding all the fierce and exotic creatures of the world that she could capture. Her applications for apprenticeship, however, were consistently denied--in fairness, she really didn't look the type. She had all of her digits and limbs, and no scars to speak of; she simply didn't have the commanding presence that the company liked to see in their handlers. She grew progressively more irritated at her employers as time passed, and hardly a year after she had arrived, she decided to make the second major and rash decision of her life--to run away from the circus and test her luck in the world at large. Before she left, though, she decided to take one last Parthian shot of at her former employers--a petty act of larceny, or so she thought. Just before she slipped out in the dead of night to make a break for the nearest town, she swiped a massive, speckled egg from its resting place in an ornate crate in the animal pens. She had no idea what it was--perhaps an ostrich, or some other great bird--but all of the higher-ups seemed to be very excited about its presence, and she figured that it'd take a bit of the wind from their sails once they discovered it missing. At the time, she never could have guessed its rarity, nor the value of the creature lying dormant within. A few days later, while Charity was resting on the side of the road, it hatched.[/collapse]
[collapse=Praxis, the Main Event]A creature of flesh, muscle, and copious amounts of intensely potent bodily fluids, Praxis was hatched on a dirt road from a stolen egg first purchased at a price higher than most men could afford in their lifetimes. The first thing that the creature saw--or smelled, or sensed, or something, given its apparent lack of any sort of ocular organ--was Charity, and as so many mythical creatures are wont to do, it judged her as its mother nearly instantly. Fortunately for the newly-birthed ball of slime and strange appendages, the young girl was entranced by its appearance rather than repulsed. In all her years scrubbing pens and bathing the myriad species that came through her former place of employment, she had never seen anything quite so exotic as this, and having no other real goals in mind she resolved to raise the creature as a partner--or pet, given the limits of its intelligence. She named it Praxis, not for any particular reason except that it was most complicated word her young mind knew, fitting for such a complex beast. It took only a year or so for the exotic mass of tentacles to reach its full size, or at least the point where its growth seemed to plateau. At its peak size, the creature expanded into a mess of tendrils, all centered around a single, exceptionally large snake-like tube of flesh with an alarmingly suggestive 'head.' Myriad smaller growths with similarly shaped ends branched out from the central body at several points, all lesser in girth but equal in dexterity. Strong enough to bend steel bars and about as smart as an average border collie, Praxis grew into a devoted (and rather intimidating) companion, and Charity trained it well--on top of being an imposing defender and traveling partner, she immediately recognized the beast's potential to be quite the attraction. The monster was taught tricks and showered with praise, and as its skill and intelligence grew, its mistress finally decided that she was ready to lead her first real show, even if it had only one act. Painting a simple wooden sign to advertise her presence on the outskirts of whatever town she found herself near at any given time and performing in a tent hardly large enough to seat more than a dozen patrons, she charged a pittance to be allowed to show off her pet to those curious enough to come--and entertained they always were. Praxis was interesting enough simply to look at, and its feats of strength and dexterity were quite enough to impress the simple folk that would bother to venture out to see a sideshow like that in the first place.[/collapse]
[collapse='Special Performances']Even though her attraction had quite a modest entry charge, Charity still made enough to sustain her and her pet's lifestyle fairly comfortably--they traveled in a one-horse covered wagon, never went hungry, and usually had enough to spare that they could repair the patches in their tent. All that changed, however, on a particularly uneventful night outside of a large city--she should have been able to pack the house given the population, but not a single soul showed up. She was just about to cut her losses and break down the set when she noticed a small group walking in--all men, all cloaked, and all very wealthy-looking. One of them, who she presumed to be their leader, wordlessly approached with his arm outstretched and a letter in his hand. The contents, written with superb penmanship on expensive parchment, detailed a lengthy and highly specific list of 'acts' to be performed between the tamer and the tamed. Every one made her blush a deeper shade of crimson than the last, and she was about to order Praxis to throw them out--but then the man approached with an envelope, which on further inspection contained... money. A lot of money. From that day forth, Charity allowed word to spread (among choice circles, of course) that for a 'nominal fee' she would put on private shows--usually in front of no more than one or two affluent audience members at a time. They were few and far between, but each paid a lucrative sum. She always limited the privileges to watching, and of course she always ran it by Praxis first, but the beast was ever-eager to 'play' with her as soon as she taught it the proper tricks. It wasn't long before she became progressively more well-off herself, buying a larger tent, a two-horse wagon, and a properly made sign to advertise her more family-friendly attraction. She quickly grew to enjoy her little indulgences, and began lowering the rates every once in a while, as well as occasionally allowing a trustworthy patron the opportunity to experience a more hands-on performance, something that Praxis took to with admirable enthusiasm. Gradually it became less of a tightly-controlled secret for the privileged few and more of an off-the-menu service available for any that cared to inquire--if anyone asked about the 'sideshow,' she knew exactly what they were talking about.[/collapse]
[collapse=tl;dr, OOC, and Scenarios]tl;dr: Charity and Praxis are a simple pair of wandering performers, except one's a moderately greedy but soft-hearted girl and one's a giant tentacle monster that behaves like a dog. They put on normal circus acts for general audiences and lewd exhibitions for people in-the-know. The family-friendly show is cheap to watch; the private ones, not so much. The more you're willing to cough up, the dirtier the pair's willing to be, so try not to be stingy. Coming with demands in mind will elicit a more positive response than just telling them to go at it, too--she's a ringleader, not a mind reader. With that in mind, the most common way anyone gets to see the pair go at it is by paying for a one-on-two session with the performers; they're more than happy to just let you watch, but audience participation is often encouraged (for a nominal price hike, of course). Charity is the only one with the real ability to communicate with her pet, so any complex requests have to go through her first, but Praxis is fairly bright for his limited brain capacity. He's also intensely loyal and protective of his owner, so trying to harm or otherwise take advantage of her is typically unwise unless you're into having your ribcage crushed by a giant, sentient pile of cocks. Catching a traveling performance isn't the only way to gain an audience, however--Charity's not at all opposed to one-off gigs that she's paid to put on, or even gainful employment in the service of a particularly wealthy patron or as part of a larger show. If she's playing in a medieval or fantasy setting, that can mean serving in the court of a king or queen (whether they're aware of her 'sideshow' performances or not), and in modern times she could have her own Vegas routine or travel with a P.T. Barnum-style circus. She also does birthdays, weddings, and other group functions, although you'd probably better make it clear which act you want her to demonstrate, lest your celebrants/spouse/boss end up in a very compromising position.[/collapse]
