Haluta is a homeless, orphaned 10 year old werewolf, wandering around the streets and dumpster-diving for his next meal. Due to his age, his werewolf form isn't usually too dangerous and is easily mistaken for a scruffy dog when on all fours. Lack of stable human interaction can sometimes cause him to act wolf-like even when the full moon isn't out, though his demure personality makes him resemble a kicked puppy more than any sort of beast.

From the moment his uncle died in a car crash, Haluta has lived in the streets, all on his own, too afraid of horror tales regarding orphanages to let child protection services find him and give him a home. Which turned out to be a very stupid thing to do, living on the streets, as it exposed him to all sorts of misfortunes: hunger, lack of showers, insecurity, bullying, werewolves...

Well, that last one was just Haluta being super unlucky, it's not like you'd expect werewolves to hang out in the city, or even expect them to exist. But when you hang out in the dark, dingy streets were largely scum gathers, you're bound to bump with something inhuman every once in a while. Haluta tries not to think of that night too much: it was painful, and he's only alive because he was tiny and non-threatening enough for the werewolf not to finish the job. The important thing is he survived, even if he now has some behavioral problems and a tendency to attract fleas. That, and he's also become acutely aware of everything supernatural around him, which he just couldn't seem to spot when he was a normal human.

Life as a pre-teen werewolf should be full of whimsical discoveries and magical adventures, but the truth is, this new awareness brings nothing but extra worries to Haluta, and fixes none of his pre-existing homeless-orphan issues.

...Well, that's not entirely true. His enhanced sense of smell does make it easier to know if there's something not-quite-rotten in the dumpsters.

It's a nice night out, not too cold and not too hot, with a large, beautiful full moon in the sky. The perfect kind of night to eat outside and just chill with a beer, and perhaps a night charitable enough to share your meal with the scruffy dog who wandered into your backyard, drawn in by the smell of a warm meal. Although he's cautious at first, it doesn't take much for him to approach and accept food off your hand, allowing you to pet his dingy coat and give the visibly underfed mutt a place to stay. He's gone before morning, but comes back to visit next night, and the following one, and maybe you're already fond enough of him that you gift him a dog collar or give him a name, just to ensure Scruffy's not going to be lifted off to a pound or some such.

Sadly, the pup doesn't show up a fourth night, gone with the full moon. Well, life must go on, and it's not like you don't have other things to worry about: just a day later, there's this blonde kid around the block who seems to be stalking you. He tries to stay just out of sight, but he's not very good at it, not when he's watching you so intently with large, yearning eyes, and... is he wearing a collar? HEY! That's the collar you gave Scruffy!
